When keeping them is no longer possible, giving them hope still is.
When life changes,
Responsible surrender can be an act of love.
Sometimes the greatest act of love is recognizing when your horse would benefit from a new path and additional support. Choosing surrender is never easy, but in some situations it is the kindest and most responsible decision for both horse and owner. At Riversong Ranch Rescue, we are committed to providing compassionate care, honest evaluation, and a safe environment where horses are given the opportunity to heal, thrive, and find a brighter future.
Horse Surrender Requirements
If you are considering surrendering a horse to our rescue, please carefully review the following requirements. Our goal is to provide safe, responsible care for horses that have a strong opportunity for rehabilitation and rehoming. Your surrender donation ($300–$550) is tax-deductible, and a receipt will be provided.
To ensure we can continue helping horses in need, we ask owners to make thoughtful and compassionate decisions before surrendering. Horses suffering from severe untreatable conditions, dangerous behavioral issues, or poor quality of life may be better served through humane euthanasia. Accepting horses that cannot be safely rehabilitated limits our ability to help others who urgently need care.
Surrender Requirements
- The owner must complete a detailed information form with full transparency regarding the horse’s health, training, temperament, and history.
- The form must be signed and dated by both the owner and an RRR staff member as a legal statement affirming the accuracy of the information provided.
- Horse must have a recent negative Coggins test
- Horse must be sound (some exceptions may apply)
- Horse over one year of age must be halter broke.
- Horse must not display aggression toward humans.
- Horse must not have dangerous or life-threatening behavioral issues, either on the ground or under saddle.
- Horse must be able to be safely housed with other horses without severe aggression.
- Emaciated horses may be considered on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the rescue, provided all other requirements are met.
Fees & Intake Process
- A surrender fee of $350 is required upon delivery ($550 for stallions).
- Each horse will undergo a brief evaluation to determine whether it meets our intake requirements. Completion of an evaluation does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
- Transportation to the rescue is the responsibility of the owner surrendering the horse.
We appreciate your honesty, cooperation, and commitment to helping us provide the best possible care for horses in need.
